Close your eyes and imagine you are standing in a quiet place on the island of Maui.

The sun is warm on your skin and the wind carries the smell of the ocean.

You are at Hal Opi Ilani Heao, an old temple made of dark lava rock. The walls are tall and strong because they were built

one stone at a time by people a long time ago. You walk slowly with your family and look up at

the big building. You start to wonder about the people who built this temple. What was life

like for them? How did they work together to make

these strong walls? You imagine them gathering here to pray and celebrate. A long time ago, the first

people arrived in Hawaii. They came in large canoes over the ocean. These people were

Polynesians. They traveled from islands far away, like Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands.

They were great sailors. They used the stars, the wind, and the ocean to find their way. When they reached Hawaii,

they made it their home. The journey was very long and sometimes hard.

The Polynesians built big canoes that could carry many people, food, and supplies.

They sailed across a huge ocean, watching the stars at night, and feeling the wind during the day to guide them.

These brave people left their old homes in the Pacific Islands to explore new lands.

They wanted to find a place with enough food, water, and safe spots to live.

By working together they built their canoes and planned the long trip.

Their smart ways of sailing and trusting nature helped them reach
