Hello there and welcome to the thinking fellows podcast.. My name is Caleb and today I'm joined by

0:22.9

Dr. Rod Rosenblatt, Scott Keith, Adam Francisco, and Dan VanVoris. We are doing episode three of Christianity

0:30.6

in America today. Dan has provided us with a pretty, I think a pretty comprehensive outline here.

0:37.1

We're going to get through this in about six episodes total.

0:40.1

So at the end of today, we'll be at the halfway mark.

0:43.7

And we're just jumping into different periods of American history, which is fun.

0:48.9

And we've also had just so many listeners sort of ask,

0:52.2

hey, why don't Lutherans have a lot of influence in American Christianity?

0:55.2

And I think partially this show will, you know, unfold that answer.

1:00.4

I'd be very happy to answer that at some point. There's a number of reasons why Lutherans don't have

1:05.2

much of a story. Not to say they don't, but one of the reasons is the fascination in American history with the

1:12.9

Northeast. And so much of American history is told a sort of northeastern history, and that

1:17.8

bothers people to no end in the South. It should bother people in the Midwest, except they're

1:22.6

too, you know, polite to say anything. But it's the same, that idea that we just tend to not tell the stories.

1:28.1

But when you look at the history of Lutheranism, you know, from the Mullenbergs who were very

1:33.9

active in the American Revolution, I mean, there are a number of stories. But I think a secondary

1:40.2

sort of line to that is also just the nature of Lutheranism and two kingdoms. And I think there's a reason why we look so quiet. And I think that's somewhat by design. Mark Knoll took that on one time in an article, I think, at first things.

1:56.9

Called Unremarkably Lutheran, I believe, was the name of that. Yeah, some article that was written with that.

2:03.1

That it's by design that we're not super involved.

2:06.7

But of course, as Americans, this story, even if it's not Lutheran, is still our story

2:12.1

because it's affected all of us and it's affected our parishes and everyone we know who goes to church.

2:23.9

So the main topic for today is the Great Awakening. But before we dive right in, I just wanted to promote some of the other things going on at 1517 right now. Generally, across a podcast network,
