Summary

I’m joined by my longtime friend Joe Rose, a partner at the law firm Gibson Dunn, for a wide-ranging and grounded conversation on the selection of Pope Leo XIV, the first ever American pope. We explore his background, reflect on the legacy of Pope Francis, and discuss possible downstream effects of Pope Leo’s ties to the Augustinian order. Along the way, we talk about grace, the ongoing relevance of Catholic Social Teaching, and how the papacy continues to shape the everyday spiritual lives of Catholics around the world, including Joe’s personal faith. Whether you’re Catholic or not, this episode offers insight into how tradition, global leadership, and theological nuance intersect in what is probably the world’s most influential faith community. ___________________________________________ Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKoch Faith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia.com -- he is accepting more work!) Hey everybody, editor Josh recommended that I put something here at the beginning of the episode.

But this is coming out on a Tuesday instead of a Monday because Sunday night I was able to get my friend Joe Rose

0:22.5

to come on and talk with me about this new Pope, the first American Pope, what people are

0:29.6

kind of expecting from him, the ways in which he is similar and possibly dissimilar to Pope Francis,

0:36.6

sort of how popular the Pope is in the United

0:40.1

States, the role that the Pope might play and how that might change with an American Pope.

0:45.7

But also we get into some personal stuff. Joe is an evangelical who returned to the Catholic

0:52.5

faith of his mother's family, along with most of his large

0:56.5

family about 10 years ago. And so he and I have kind of two different tracks. As long-time

1:03.8

listeners know, I got pretty close to becoming Catholic five, six years ago, ultimately decided

1:09.0

not to, but still have a lot of warmth and appreciation

1:12.8

for that tradition. So we get into some of that stuff as well. Thank you for your patience with

1:18.6

the slightly different schedule here. I can't wait for August and beyond when my wings have been

1:26.8

no longer clipped by this year-long internship, and

1:30.0

appreciate all your guys' patience.

1:31.8

Thanks.

1:41.2

Welcome back, everybody, to You Have Permission, the show that aims to take both Christianity

and the modern world of science and culture.

Very seriously, I'm Dan Koch.
