Summary

We’re looking at a very famous passage about Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the cleansing of the temple. And in the midst of this passage, there’s the curious incident of the fig tree. In this we can see 1) the character Jesus has, 2) the power he brings, and 3) how that power reproduces his character in you and me. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 17, 2006. Series: King's Cross: The Gospel of Mark, Part 2: The Journey to the Cross. 0:30.8	chapter 11 verses 1 through 18. As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethvege and Bethany at the
0:40.1	Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples saying to them, go to the village ahead of you and
0:46.7	just as you enter it, you will find a cult tied there which no one has ever written. Untie it and
0:52.4	bring it here. If anyone asks you, why are you doing this? Tell them the Lord needs it and we'll
0:59.1	send it back here shortly. They went and found a cult outside in the street tied it a doorway.
1:06.8	As they untied it, some people standing there asked, what are you doing untying that cult?
1:13.1	They answered as Jesus had told them to and the people let them go. When they brought the
1:18.6	cult to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the
1:24.5	road while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who
1:30.6	followed shouted, Hosanna blessed as he who comes in the name of the Lord blessed as the coming
1:37.3	kingdom of our Father David, Hosanna in the highest. Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple.
1:45.2	He looked around at everything but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the 12.
1:51.2	The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance of fig tree
1:57.1	in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves
2:03.2	because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, may no one ever eat fruit from
2:10.7	you again. His disciples heard him say it. On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area
2:18.4	and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the
2:24.1	money changers and the benches of those selling doves and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise
