By 1893, Sherlock Holmes' creator Arthur Conan Doyle had become tired of writing stories about his fictional detective to the detriment of his other works.

In a letter to his mother, he confided, I grow weary of his name. He takes my mind

from better things. In August of that same year, Doyle traveled to Switzerland with his wife,

Louisa, where they visited the village of Myringen in the Bernese

Alps, and happened upon the majestic and terrifying falls of Richenbach. The author had found the perfect

end for his beloved protagonist.

Upon returning to London, gentle Louisa was diagnosed with tuberculosis,

an ailment which would claim her life.

Doyle had made up his mind.

He was finished with Sherlock Holmes forever.

Nearly 100 years later, as filming on Granada's adaptation of the final problem came to a close,

actor Jeremy Brett would discover that his wife, Joan Wilson, had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,

a disease which would also claim her life. It was then that Brett too vowed to be finished

with Sherlock Holmes.

But both men would come to have a change of heart.

I'm As our story begins, Sherlock Holmes flees for his life.

After narrowly evading the hooves of a murderous horse and cab, Holmes finds himself the target of a falling statue,

launched at his head from a harrowing height.

As he flies through the back streets of London, he finds his escape is blocked by a duo of bloodthirsty brutes.

But Holmes' fighting skills shine through, and he dispatches the thugs with haste. Back on his feet, he runs once more.

His enemies are closing in.
