journalists from all around the world. I'm your host Faranak Amid. On this episode of the Fifth Floor we hear what it's like to live near a mineral mine.

This is the sound of an actual explosion in a mine near Lubombashi, the second largest city in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It's an open pit mine where cobalt and copper are extracted.

These are hot commodities these days. Lots of people want to get their hands on

these precious resources because they are used in green technologies such as batteries

for electric cars and solar panels.

According to the UN, if the world is to reach net zero by 2050, the use of minerals such as

lithium and cobalt must increase sixfold by 2040. Now Chinese companies are some of the key players in this race to mine minerals

crucial to the green transition. But some are worried this could come at a cost for local people and
