Dorothy Monaghan, 16, a Catholic high school student, was recovering from severe head wounds today

after she was clubbed brutally by an armed burglar

at the Joe Floyd residence, 121 North Summit Avenue, at 11 p.m. Thursday.

Police theorized the intruder was frightened at finding anyone in the house,

and slugged the girl with the butt of a gun when he discovered her asleep on the

Davenport. Knocked unconscious by blows on the head, she lay on the Davenport for 30 minutes

before coming to her senses, and then her screams attracted neighbors and police were summoned.

At a hospital this morning, the girl said,

it all seems like a dream to me. I was on the Davenport and half asleep when I felt something

on my shoulders. I looked up and saw the form of a man standing over me. He pushed me down and

slugged me with the gun the girl dark-haired

dark-eyed and pretty was staying at the Floyd home with Joe Floyd Jr. two years old

while the Floyds were out for the evening. The first neighbor to respond to the

screams was Mrs. A. C. Shoneman,

120 North Summit Avenue, who resides across the street. Peering through the hooked front

screen, she saw the girl on the Davenport, her head, covered with blood. Dorothy staggered to

the door, unhooked the screen, and fell back into a chair.

Mrs. C. H. Carlson, who resides upstairs at 120 North Summit, Mrs. H. E. Beatty,

121.5 North Springs Avenue, and a Mrs. Peterson at 109 North Spring Avenue arrived quickly. Police found the prowler had

poked a hole through the screen door at the side of the house, reached his hand inside, and
