Summary

There are thousands of festivals in the UK each year and millions of us go to them. But as an organiser how do you make any money? Do logistics and the British weather make them a risky business? Every year festivals get cancelled and some cease trading. Profit margins are tight, say organisers, and set-up costs are high. A big festival may have to pay more a million pounds to secure a top headline act.

Evan Davis and guests discuss mud, music and hard cash.

Guests: Syima Aslam, co-founder and director of the Bradford Literature Festival Ian Stockley, chief executive of the Bath Festivals. Simon Taffe, co-founder of the End of The Road Festival.

stressful activity. If I tell you that Glastonbury costs tens of millions to organise and made

a profit of under 900,000 after tax for its 2016 show, you know, there's

0:56.6

little room for mistakes, and that is in a business where it is all too easy to make mistakes.

1:02.5

Well, I've three guests who know all about putting festivals on. They run three very different

They might choose their own bands to play.

1:26.5

They might choose their own films. Yeah, they might choose their own films.
