at first nobody understood what they were looking at.

It was November 4, 1970, in Temple City, California, a quiet suburb on the edge of Los Angeles.

That morning, a social worker was left concerned when a young girl arrived at the office with her mother.

Something about her wasn't right. She looked younger than her 13 years. She was silent, and her

behaviour was unusual. It quickly became clear this was not a typical case.

They had found her.

Only later did authorities begin to understand what she had been through.

The girl had spent years, possibly most of her life, restrained to a child's potty chair,

isolated from the outside world.

She was a teenager, but severely underweight.

Her arms hung stiffly, her legs were thin,

and her movements were slow and uncertain.

When spoken to, she didn't respond in any meaningful way.

She didn't ask for help. It wasn't clear she understood what was being said.

Instead, she made small sounds, quiet, repetitive noises. The girl could not speak. She could barely walk.

And she had spent almost her entire life confined to a single room.

There had been no real interaction, no education, no normal childhood, just isolation and control.
