I'm in a terrace house in East London sitting on a bed talking to a woman we're calling

layer. We've changed her voice as well. The reason we're sitting on her bed is because there's nowhere else in this room.

Her children's bed is heaped up with their clothes and the rest of the floor space is taken

up by suitcases, food and cleaning products.

Every time she needs something, she has to dig through this huge pile.

Laya and her children became homeless,

and the local council offered her two rooms in a house

with people she didn't know. So altogether ten at the moment but there have been

weeks where there were thirteen and 14 people living here.

This is what's known as a house of multiple occupation,

somewhere that more than three people who

aren't from the same family live together.
