At around 9 p.m. on January 6, 2018, 49-year-old Gregory Davis was home with his wife and family

in Danville, Vermont, when flashing lights appeared outside. Gregory and his wife, Melissa, heard a knock at the door.

When Gregory opened up, he saw U.S. Marshal standing there.

The marshal told Gregory that he was under arrest for charges related to racketeering.

Now, this must have been a shock to Gregory, but he had been involved in some litigation

for a big case that was due to go to trial in 19 days.

So he went upstairs and told Melissa that he was going to go with the marshal to straighten things out. The marshal arrested

Gregory in front of Melissa and his 12-year-old son. They drove away into the night. Gregory's wife

expected to get a call from Gregory or one of his attorneys, but Melissa

Davis never got that call. Instead, Gregory vanished without a trace. The next afternoon,

police found Gregory's body. It had been partially buried in a snowbank off Peacham Road

and Barnett, about 15 miles away from his home. Gregory had been shot

multiple times, in the head and in the torso. He was still handcuffed. Of course, the first

question his devastated family must have had was, where was the federal marshal? They were shocked

to find out that this mysterious man was not a U.S. Marshal at all.

He was a hired killer.

Later, investigators would discover ties to a Turkish street magician turned biotech tycoon,

a massive $100 million medical fraud, and a scandal that reminds me of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos,

but is about a thousand times worse. This case really illustrates how red-collar criminals

who are trying to survive in the cutthroat corporate culture can escalate to murder. I'm
