The end of slavery is generally hailed as a moment of triumph in our history.

But according to the historian Professor Chris Manjapra,

if we examine emancipations more closely,

a much more complex story emerges.

Chris's new book, Black Ghost of Empire, argues that the ways in which slavery ended actually helped to perpetuate systems of oppression rather than disrupt them.

I spoke to him to find out more.

In Black Ghost of Empire, you say that, quote, the history of slavery and emancipation is not a story of endings, but unendings.

What exactly do you mean by that?
