Chapter 5, The Queen's necklace

Two or three times each year on occasions of unusual importance such as the balls at the Austrian Embassy

or the Suarez of Lady Billingstone, the Countess to Drosubis wore upon her white shoulders the Queen's necklace.

It was indeed the famous necklace, the legendary necklace that Bomber and Bassange caught jewelers that made the Madden de Barry,

the veritable necklace that the Cardinal, the Rowan Suarez intended to give to Mary Antoinette, Queen of France,

and the saying that the adventurer, Jean de Valleaux, Countess de Lamotte, had pulled to pieces one evening in February, 1785,

with the aid of her husband and their accomplice, Reto de Villette.

To tell the truth, the mountain alone was genuine.

Reto de Villette had kept it whilst the Count de Lamotte and his wife scattered to the four winds of heaven, the beautiful stones so carefully chosen by Bomber.

Later, he sold the mountain to Gaston de la Drosubis, nephew of the Cardinal, who repurchased the few diamonds that remained in the possession of the English jeweler, Jeffries, supplemented them with other stones of the same size, but of much inferior quality,
