This week we're bringing you stories to mark 50 years since Asians were expelled from

Uganda.

In 2011, Fahana Dalwood spoke to Nuddin Dalwood, her father, who was made stateless and quickly

had to find a new country to call home.

This program contains descriptions of racial discrimination.

It's August 1972, the military dictator General Edia Men, who's been ruling Uganda for

a year, announces that the Asian presence in his country must end within 90 days.

I have already decided that all Asian with British citizens must live Uganda.

I think Uganda will benefit if Asian are out of Uganda, because Asian have been milking

Uganda's money.

Thousands of Asians had been living in Uganda for a century.

They were brought to East Africa by the British to build railways and stayed on, immersing

themselves in business and building up a large, prosperous community.

At first my father, Nuddin Dalwood, just didn't believe Edia means decree.

Nobody took it seriously for the first two weeks.

Nobody was impressed or depressed in the first two weeks.

I went on as normal, people took it very, very light heartedly and did not believe what

Edia Men had said, especially when he said that he had had a dream.

He said he had had a dream that he had to get rid of all the Asians.

So nobody would believe him.

But unfortunately he meant what he said.
