welcome to the evidence from the BBC World Service. I'm Claudia Hammond and today we have a special

edition of the program produced in collaboration with Welcome Collection.

We are looking at COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus sweeping the world.

This time last year I was in Hong Kong for the evidence, and we discussed what the world

could learn from the outbreak of another kind of coronavirus SARS in 2003.

Little did we know then that the next big viral outbreak would happen so soon or so dramatically.

In less than a year we've gone from the theory that we were discussing to the practice.

So today we have almost an hour to hear the best evidence to get to the bottom of what's going on and what might

happen next. Usually of course we'd have an audience but that's not safe in the UK

or in many other places now. So my panel and I are sitting in various homes, offices and studios.
