On this episode of five minutes in church history, we'll be talking about a yacht.

This was a yacht named the Evangel.

The story of this yacht begins with Florence Young.

Florence Young was born in 1856 in Hamilton, New Zealand.

So as a British family and her father had left England and had come to New Zealand to strike out on his own and make his mark.

When she was a young lady, she was sent back to England to boarding school and then she returned and met up with her family again in New Zealand.

Her father decided they would leave New Zealand and they went off to Queensland in Australia.

And there her father and her brothers established a very large sugar plantation.

It was while she was in Australia that Florence Young met George Mueller.

Of course, George Mueller's famous for his orphanages and his mission work and his ministry of faith and he had a

profound influence on Florence Young. She looked across these sugar

plantations and saw all the workers. These were the Kanakis people.

These were people from various Pacific islands

and they migrated to New Zealand and to Australia

to work on the plantations and the farms.

And she looked out over the sugar plantation and saw this

Kanaka's people and she was burdened for them and so she began her mission work.

She began praying for them. She began holding Bible studies and this eventually grew into what was called the

Queensland Canaucus Mission. About this time, she met Hudson Taylor. Of course, Hudson Taylor had established the China Inland Mission

and was very interested in bringing young and pioneering missionaries

just like Florence Young to China. So Florence Young was able to turn the

Queensland Kanakis mission over to her trusted lieutenants and they ran the
