Summary

Could the fight over the Epstein files mark a turning point for MAGA? In an excerpt from this week’s Insider episode, Preet Bharara and Joyce Vance discuss Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s break with President Trump over his administration’s stonewalling of the release of Epstein documents. They also react to Trump’s directive to his Justice Department to investigate Democrats over alleged ties to Jeffrey Epstein—while avoiding similar scrutiny of himself and his Republican allies. In the full episode, Preet and Joyce break down a magistrate judge’s opinion in the Comey prosecution, criticizing DOJ for possible government misconduct that could lead to dismissal of the charges. So now you get to a point where there's a congressional measure to force the release of all sorts of unreleased, undisclosed Epstein documents that has been opposed by the sitting president of United States, all of whose base have been clamoring for the release of those documents for years.

1:11.8

What's up with that?

1:17.1

Yeah, I mean, gaslighting Gambit maybe characterizes the entire exercise because Donald Trump has paid lip service to releasing the files.

1:21.3

He did it during the campaign.

And then we learn, I think it's July 7,

1:26.2

where Pam Bondi announces that the Epstein investigation is being closed, that there was no evidence supporting additional charges being brought against any third parties.

had advised Trump that his name had surfaced in the files and that this was maybe part and parcel of

ending the investigation. And then the administration does that about face, as you say. And what I

1:57.6

think, just to cut straight to the chase here, right? What's happening is Trump is now supporting release of the files, knowing that having directed Pam Bondi to reopen an investigation only into Democrats who were named, that DOJ will assert to Congress that it can't release the files because it has an ongoing investigation.

2:19.4

I'm just at such a loss as how you can explain that. On the one hand, the Trump folks just want

2:27.6

to persecute, harass, prosecute, imprison Democrats. On the other hand, they don't want documents
