This is episode two. Hello and welcome back to History Extra's

End of Roman Britain Podcast series. This is episode two and my name is David Musgrove. I'm your

host for the series. In the first episode, I took you to Chedworth Roman Villa in a quiet corner

of rural Western England for a look at a recently unearthed mosaic that seems to suggest that some people, at least, were trying to carry on a Roman way of life a few decades after the traditional end of Roman Britain.

Now that end point is going to be challenged as we go through our series, so hold that thought.

But before we can properly interrogate what happened in and around the start of the 5th century,

we need a thorough understanding of what things were like in late Roman Britain.

And for that, I've enlisted the help of Nottingum University's Dr Will Bowden,

who's Professor of Roman Archaeology there and an expert on the topic.

He's our guide.

And the first thing I asked him was if he could define and characterize late Roman Britain for us.
