aside from this podcast, of course,

you have been hearing about the cascade of layoffs at myriad tech companies.

And maybe you're one of the thousands of people

who recently learned they were out of a job. And maybe you learned about it by email. And so we've

been thinking about you all. And we're going to talk about layoffs from a few different

perspectives.

And the most important one is really about the impact on people who are being laid off.

And because this is feeling for us like a really important topic,

and for those of you who like me spent too much time watching television,

kind of like a special episode of Blossom.

We're doing something special today, and Jason is going to be taking over the hosting.

Thanks, Amy. To be clear, one of the things that we talked about as we were preparing for this

episode was I was the only one of us who had never been laid off.

And so it felt very appropriate for me to take a step back into the hosting role, to elevate the stories of people who have been through this because we think that's going to be really important.

So to kick us off, in 2019, there was an article in Vice by writer Eliana Lev, who puts it pretty bluntly,

when it comes to shitty life milestones being laid off and contracting an STI have some

remarkable similarities. I speak from experience. Both make you question yourself worth,
