Summary

Since the ratification of the United States Constitution in 1788, there have been 60 presidential elections, which have been run every four years. Over time, a system was developed for the election of the president, including how parties select a candidate and how votes are selected. Some of this has been done via legislation, some via tradition, and some via constitutional amendments.
