The conflict began after Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli police near the Al-Axamasque

in Jerusalem. Since then, at least 230 people have been killed in Gaza and 13 in Israel.

The truce was proposed by Egypt which acted as an intermediary between the two sides. It

follows mounting international pressure to bring the fighting to an end. Joe Biden,

an America's president, said it was an opportunity for progress.

I believe the Palestinian's in Israelis equally deserve to live safely and securely and

to enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity and democracy. My administration will continue

our quiet and relentless diplomacy toward that end.

But there are fears that the ceasefire just brings us back to a tense and unchanged status

quo. Both Hamas and Israel had achieved most of their objectives pretty early on in this

round of warfare.
