In a historic move, the House of Representatives has voted to depose its leader, Kevin McCarthy.

Democrats, along with a group of conservative allies led by Representative Matt Gates, join forces to strip McCarthy of his position.

It remains unclear who will succeed McCarthy.

Representative Patrick McHenry was named as temporary speaker immediately after the vote.

Eight Republicans voted against McCarthy, and three House leaders have been suggested as potential replacements,

though they have disavowed any interest so far.

McCarthy's troubles with his right-wing faction escalated when he supported a stopgap spending bill that averted a shutdown,

but did not include the spending cuts or conservative border policies he had promised.

This marks the first successful attempt to remove a speaker in the House's history with the last such attempt dating back to 1910.
