Our top stories from international outlets this morning. According to the BBC, rival factions of Sudan's military have agreed to renew a three-day ceasefire shortly before it was due to expire.

The extension, which is scheduled for another 72 hours, follows intensive diplomatic efforts by neighboring countries, as well as the United States, United Kingdom, and the United Nations.

But there are continuing reports of heavy fighting in the capital, Khartoum. The previous truce allowed thousands of people to attempt to flee to safety, while dozens of countries have tried to evacuate their citizens.

Almost two weeks of fighting between the army and arrival paramilitary group have left hundreds dead. The ceasefire had been expected to end at midnight local time on Thursday.

Early on Thursday evening, the Sudanese regular army agreed to an extension, and its rival, the paramilitary rapid support forces, followed suit hours later.

South Sudan has offered to host peace talks, and the army has agreed to send representatives to the talks. Both factions fear losing power in Sudan, because on both sides there are men who could end up at the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed in Darfur almost 20 years ago.

The New York Times reports that former Vice President Mike Pence appeared on Thursday before the grand jury hearing evidence about former President Trump's efforts to cling to power after he lost the 2020 election, a person briefed on the matter said, testifying in a criminal inquiry that could shape the legal and political fate of his one-time boss, impossible 2024 arrival.

Mr. Pence spent more than five hours behind closed doors at the Federal District Court in Washington in an appearance that came after he was subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury earlier this year.

It is not clear what testimony Mr. Pence provided on Thursday, but prosecutors were surely interested in Mr. Pence's accounts of his interactions with Mr. Trump and Trump advisors, including John Eastman,

a lawyer who promoted the idea that they could use the congressional certification process on January 6th to give Mr. Trump a chance to remain in office.

According to Reuters, Russia hurled missiles at cities across Ukraine as people slept early on Friday, killing at least 12 people in the first large-scale air strikes in nearly two months.

The early morning attacks were carried out as Kyiv prepares to launch a counteroffensive to try to retake Russian occupied territory.

In the central city of Uman, firefighters battled a raging blaze at a residential apartment building that had been struck on an upper floor.

At least 10 people were killed, including two children and nine were taken to the hospital.

The Ukrainian military said it shot down 21 of 23 cruise missiles fired by Russia.

The Russian terror must face a fair response from Ukraine and the world, President Vladimir Zelinsky wrote in a telegram post alongside images of the wreckage, and it will.
