In this podcast, we’re going to talk about the downfall of high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup has been a very popular sweetener for the past 30 years. In 1980 an average American was consuming about 20 pounds of high fructose corn syrup. The consumption of high fructose corn syrup spiked in the year 2000 to 61 pounds, and by 2015 it was down again to 39 pounds. Many different companies have been making the shift from high fructose corn syrup to other forms of sugar.

The problem with high fructose corn syrup is that it is 53% glucose and 42% fructose—the rest is different types of sugars. The fructose can do some serious damage to the liver. All of your cells have receptors for glucose, but not fructose. Only your liver can break down fructose. If you consume a lot of fructose, you can overload the liver and create all sorts of health problems.

High fructose corn syrup is also made in a lab with cornstarch. Corn is GMO, so you’re getting that added glyphosate.

Thankfully, high fructose corn syrup and even sugar are becoming less popular. I think it has something to do with the awareness of the keto diet.

Consumption of different products in the 70’s versus present day:

 • Milk — down 44%

 • Beef — down 33%

 • Cheese — up 193%

 • Yogurt — up 1600%

 • Grains — up 12.7%

 • Corn — up 180%

 • Corn sweetener — up 300%

 • Chicken — up 110%

 • Vegetable oil — up 270%

 • Soy — up 190%

sweetener for the last 30 years. In fact, in 1980, an average American was consuming about 20 pounds of it per year,

0:57.2

and then it spiked in the year 2000, the 61 pounds. And then in 2015, went down to 39. And if I'm

1:06.8

not mistaken, in the last couple of years, it's even downtrening from that point.

1:11.2

In fact, quite a few companies are making the shift from high-furtess corn syrup to different

1:17.3

forms of sugar, unfortunately. PepsiCo, Snapple, Pizza Hut, Kraft Foods, and there's actually

1:24.5

a really long list of companies that are moving away from high fructose corn syrup.

1:29.3

The problem with high fructose corn syrup is that we have 53% glucose, then we have 42% fructose,

1:40.3

and the rest of it is different types of sugars.

1:43.3

And the problem is this fructose right here

1:45.3

does some serious damage to your liver all of your cells have receptors for glucose but not fructose

1:52.4

only the liver has these receptors to break down fructose if you're consuming a lot of fructose

1:58.8

what's going to happen is you're going to overload the liver,

2:09.7

and you're going to create all sorts of problems with insulin resistance, a fatty liver, eventual cirrhosis.

2:13.1

So fructose is very unhealthy for the liver.

2:22.6

Now, what's ironic is sucrose, table sugar, is 50-50, roughly, glucose and fructose.

2:29.5

So table sugar, from my viewpoint, is also very, very unhealthy because it has a lot of fruit toast.

2:37.5

Fructose is the fastest way to fatten up your liver and your gut, but also the way that they make Hypertose corn syrup is in a lab, and it comes from corn starch, okay? And corn is GML. Now, cane sugar is not

2:49.4

GMO, but beet sugar, and by the way, there's a tremendous amount of beet sugar
