0:17.0 | It's been a real popular sweetener for the last 30 years. |
0:21.0 | In fact, in 1980, an average American was consuming about 20 pounds of it per year. |
0:27.0 | And then it spiked in your 2000 to 61 pounds. |
0:31.0 | And then in 2015, went down to 39. |
0:36.0 | And if I'm not mistaken, in the last couple of years, it's even down-training from that point. |
0:41.0 | In fact, quite a few companies are making the shift from high-fortose corn syrup to different forms of sugar, unfortunately. |
0:49.0 | PepsiCo, Snapple, Pizza Hut, Craft Foods. |
0:53.0 | And there's actually a really long list of companies that are moving away from high-fortose corn syrup. |
0:59.0 | The problem with high-fortose corn syrup is that we have 53% glucose, then we have 42% fructose. |
1:10.0 | And the rest of it is different types of sugars. |
1:13.0 | And the problem is this fructose right here does some serious damage to your liver. |
1:18.0 | All of your cells have receptors for glucose, but not fructose. |
1:23.0 | Only the liver has these receptors to break down fructose. |
1:27.0 | If you're consuming a lot of fructose, what's going to happen is you're going to overload the liver |
1:31.0 | and you're going to create all sorts of problems with insulin resistance, a fatty liver, eventual cirrhosis. |
1:40.0 | So fructose is very unhealthy for the liver. |
1:44.0 | Cyronic is sucrose, table sugar is 50, 50 roughly glucose and fructose. |
1:53.0 | So table sugar, from my viewpoint, is also very, very unhealthy because it has a lot of fructose. |
