| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Dividend Cafe weekly market commentary focused on dividends in your portfolio and dividends in your understanding of economic life. |
| 0:12.0 | Welcome to Dividend Cafe. This is Thursday, December the 5th. |
| 0:17.0 | Brian Saitel with you in our West Palm Beach, Florida office on what ended up being a bit of a down day modestly. |
| 0:25.1 | We actually had positive territory in the morning and was essentially a flat market through mid-morning and then gave way and just traded a bit lower all the way through into the close. |
| 0:35.7 | We ended up down 248 points on the Dow, about 0.2% |
| 0:40.1 | down on both the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ. So a bit of a down day. Still positive momentum, though. |
| 0:46.3 | We've been higher on the S&P 11 out of the last 13 sessions. So I'll call that a positive |
| 0:52.3 | environment overall. |
| 0:55.5 | But there you have it. On the yield spectrum, 10-year was down a basis point. |
| 0:59.1 | We closed at 417. |
| 1:01.5 | So kind of an uneventful day overall in the trading markets. |
| 1:04.8 | There was a couple of economic pieces out. |
| 1:07.2 | The U.S. trade deficit did narrow for the month of October. |
| 1:10.6 | There was some resolve in a |
| 1:13.5 | port strike that happened, and then just simply the old imports fell more than exports, and so |
| 1:19.1 | that number came down a little bit. We still were down at a deficit of 73.8 billion, |
| 1:24.5 | so there's no need to get too excited about it, which is a little better than |
| 1:28.7 | expected, but still a pretty big number here if you annualize that number. Initial jobless claims |
| 1:34.5 | were a little weaker than expected. We got a 224 number. We thought it would be closer to 214. So a little |
| 1:41.5 | worse on initial jobless claims. but frankly, anything that's sort of |
| 1:45.5 | floating around this lower tier of the 200,000 range is just fine and healthy for the labor |
| 1:51.8 | market. And that's where we've been now for many months. So not a whole lot has changed there. |
