It all began in the town of Marana, Arizona, just a northwest of Tucson, sort of like a suburban commuter town kind of place.

It lies mostly in Pima County, home to about 50,000 fine Arizona folks.

And one thing to note is, well, okay, it's going to be like pretty obvious, but I mean, come on, give me a

break here. It's hot there. This may come as a shock to some of you, but it gets hot there. Like,

there's a fierce number of those real hot ones. In July, when our story is set, you're talking

about like 45, 46 degrees Celsius, which is like 115 degrees Fahrenheit. It's a kind of heat where the air

itself feels like it's pissed off at you. You're toasty. I wouldn't last two seconds. And speaking

of hot days, July 9, 2024, a real scorcher. It was at roughly 4.15 p.m. that day that a 911 call went in to the Marana Police Department.

The call was about a child, found unresponsive in the backseat in West Payton's Court, this quiet,

residential area. It looks like Walter White's neighborhood. All pretty unremarkable, but

ain't that just a way?

Why is it always that the most horrifying crimes

happen in the most mundane places?

That's probably what makes them so horrifying,
