It's a cool foggy morning in February 1995 at a park in Mountain View, California.

General Magic Senior Engineer Phil Goldman walks along the path, clasping two coffees and a bag of donuts.

Further ahead, he spots Tony Fidel waiting for him on a bench. Phil is Tony's supervisor, and he's asked him here this morning for this meeting.

Tony has barely been in the office since General Magic's first product, the Magic Link, went on sale, and it's not like him to be so absent. Phil is worried.

When Tony first visited the General Magic office in 1991 looking for a job, it was Phil who greeted him.

And back then, he insisted to Tony that the company wasn't hiring. Now Phil must convince him to come back to work.

Hey, good morning sunshine. Hey Phil.

Tony seems dejected. Phil hands him a coffee and sits down next to him on a bench.

He pulls open the paper bag and offers it to Tony.

And there's a donut in here for him. You look like you could do with something to eat.

Yeah, thanks. Tony digs out a donut and takes a bite.

They sit and just drink their coffees for a moment before Phil finally breaks the silence.

So, the Magic Link sucks. Tony can't help but laugh through a mouthful of donut.

Hey, look at that. You can smile. We've missed you at the office.

No, I'm okay, man. I'm just tired. Well, you can talk to me, you know.

We're all disappointed with how the Magic Link turned out.

It was three years of my life, Phil. Three years of all of our lives. We put everything we had into it.

We were supposed to change the world and then it gets out there and the Magic Link sucks. Yeah.

It sucks so bad. It's embarrassing.

So come back to work and let's make it better.

I need more time. We're short, but I think I've gotten to know you pretty well these last few years.
