When 25-year-old Chris Bird didn't return home after a camping trip in New Hampshire with a friend,

alarm bells began to ring. Days later, his car was found abandoned at a nearby mall with flat tires,

and Chris was nowhere to be found. Then, a newspaper article exposed a troubling past connected with his friend, turning concern into something far more unsettling, and raising the possibility that Chris hadn't simply disappeared.

Music is the disappearance of Christopher Byrd on murder, she told. Donna Byrd was concerned that her husband hadn't returned home.

He was supposed to come back on Sunday from his camping trip to the mountains,

but now it was Monday morning, and he still wasn't back.

Her parents were moving, and this was the day of the move.

He had committed to help, but he was nowhere to be found.

Something, she had decided, was terribly wrong.

Helping your in-laws move during your summer break from teaching doesn't sound like much fun, but Donna knew her husband.

Chris was the kind of guy that was generous with his time, responsible, reliable. So where was he? He left on Thursday, four days prior with a friend of

his, Richard Brunt, who went by Dick. They were going on a camping trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire,

which was about two hours away from where Chris and Donna lived. They had a unit in an apartment

building in Haveral, Massachusetts, not far from the downtown. Donna was out of town as well.

She visited her sister in Maine, returning on Sunday. The last time that she had seen Chris

was at their home before they each went their separate ways. Both Donna and Chris were scheduled

to return home on Sunday. Although we don't know at exactly what time, Donna called Dick on the

telephone and spoke to him on Sunday. She asked him about her husband.

Dick was married to a woman named Hannah Lorre, and they had a son together, but he was estranged

from his family, and he was living at a place called DQ Stables in the tack room.

Dick, who was a teacher and the principal for a private religious school, had fewer responsibilities to the school since it was July, so he was working at the stables as a caretaker for the summer.
