There’s been a marked rise over the last decade of nationalist and authoritarian politics. Global freedom declined for a 17th consecutive year in 2022, according to a Freedom House annual report. The rise of MAGAism in the U.S., neo-facism in Italy and hard-right politics in Israel are just a few examples of why democracy around globe continues to hang on a knife’s edge. Our guest this week has experienced first-hand the deleterious effects of attacks, perpetrated by opponents of democracy, on civil, political and press freedom. Rula Jebreal is an award-winning journalist, bestselling author, foreign policy expert and visiting professor at the University of Miami. She joins WITHpod to discuss the interconnectedness of the global authoritarian movement, the personal attacks she has witnessed, what is at stake, how authoritarian gains could be rolled back and more.

0:09.3	that we thought America was teaching the rest of the world how to be respectful and inclusive of their minorities,

0:36.2	You know, one of the most disturbing global trends of the last, I don't know,
0:46.7	eight to ten years, is the rise of a specific kind of 21st century right wing populist,
0:56.2	nationalist authoritarian politics.
0:59.6	And I mean, obviously these kinds of politics have existed for a long time.
1:03.3	I think particularly let's talk about Europe for a moment and I think in the US as well.
1:07.8	I think in Europe and the US obviously populist authoritarian anti-immigrant movements were the core of the rise of fascism, right?
1:19.1	Right wing fascism, it happened in Spain, Italy obviously Nazi Germany.
1:23.0	But there were fascist movements in all other kinds of places.
1:25.6	My colleague Rachel Maddo with a great podcast, Rachel Maddo presents Ultra,
1:31.0	which is about fascist sympathizers in the US and their relationship to Nazi Germany.
1:36.2	There were fascist movements in Greece, there were far right fascist movements in Eastern Europe.
1:41.2	Some of them, you know, teaming up with the Nazis against the Soviets during that period of time.
1:45.2	But this kind of politics, I think much of it was rung out or purged or discredited in the wake of World War II.

1:58.3	when happens post war were to particularly in what we now call the West, right?
