Let's do a quick recap.

When we last left off, we had talked about five of our nation's first ladies, Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Martha Jefferson, actually died before Jefferson took office, Dolly Madison and Elizabeth Monroe.

And we had also talked about the lives of some of the people with whom they were uniquely intertwined, like Ben Franklin,

the Hemmings family, and political scandal mongerer James Callender. But by the time our next first

lady entered the White House, the era of the founding fathers was coming to an end.

James Monroe was the last president who had also been a framer of the Constitution and

the nation was beginning to transform.
