from Providence, Rhode Island. It's incredible and makes me feel incredibly old that Occupy Wall Street

took off 10 years ago. It happened at a moment when no one thought that such a thing was possible.

The left, after all, had been in a state of nearer relevancy for decades. The anti-globalization

movement that began in the late 90s and the Iraq War movement had boomed and then fizzled.

And even during those brief booms, the left's assumed posture and ambition was to descend and

oppose. The idea that the point is to win, power, and govern to transform society, such a common

place premise on the left today was not on the table. It was almost unimaginable. Occupy generated

a ton of debating criticism on the left at the time and also in the years after, but looking back

a decade, it's impossible to imagine the renewed U.S. left that we have today coming into existence

without Occupy and the cycle of social movements that Occupy kicked off. And then, of course,

the Bernie campaigns, which spoke Occupy's language of class war against the 1%.
