For much of the 20th century, Cold War politics defined socialism as the antithesis of democracy.

The liberal Cold War order, sensitive to international

embarrassment, did make room for civil rights gains,

but it also marginalized radical politics at home,

violently intervened across the globe

to crush the aspirations of decolonizing peoples,

and laid the so-called color-blind building blocks of mass incarceration

and the war on immigrants. Today an insurgent Democratic Socialist movement is

transforming US politics.
