The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan occasioned a tidal wave of U.S. media attention

to a country and people about whom Americans have not thought about much for years, but

suddenly professed to passionately care about.

The war had long since faded into the background noise of American Empire, the first of what

became so many forever wars.

Remarkably though, Americans by and large never knew much about Afghanistan.
