On April 19, 2018, a woman was walking her dog through Canarsie Park in Brooklyn, New York,

when she saw something horrifying near a pedestrian pathway. It was a torso. The body was naked,

face down, and covered with leaves. Police immediately came to the scene and they kept finding body

parts. In one part of the part, they found arms and legs. The woman had been dismembered. Her arms

had been severed at the elbow and both legs had been severed at the hips. In another part of the

part, they found her head. Investigators didn't know her name at first. All they had was a single

identifying detail, a tattoo above her left breast. It was a single word, chocolate. As soon as the

story got out on social media that a body had been found and a description of the tattoo became

public, Nicole Odom, who lived nearby, heard the details of this case

and thought of her daughter, 26-year-old Brandy Odom, who she knew had a similar tattoo. Nicole

Odom took pictures of Brandy to the 69th precinct, the NYPD precinct handling the case, and asked

them, was the body in the park her daughter?

She got an answer that is every parent's worst nightmare. The remains were Brandy's.

Nicole also immediately started talking to reporters. She talked to New York One.

She told the news channel that her daughter had been kind and loved by everyone who knew her.

She also said, quote, she was a human being and asked who could have inflicted such horror on her.

Brandy's shocking murder would eventually turn into a federal murder-for-hire case and involve sex work, fraudulent life

insurance policies, extreme abuse, identity theft, dismemberment by power tools, and a man who

prosecutors said, watched true crime shows to learn how to cover up a killing. I'm Catherine

She was living in Queens, but her mother told reporters that she regularly came to that area,
