Summary

Tonight, I'm going to tell you a very famous story from Thailand. The story was recommended to me by a fan, and I had never heard of it before. And the second I started looking into it, I knew – that I had to tell this one sitting in front of a campfire. As you listen, you might think you can guess what’s going to happen next – but I had never heard anything like this before, and I bet you haven’t either. he could not wait to get there.

1:32.3

So Mock had been away for almost an entire year by this point.

1:36.7

And that was because around a year ago, he'd been drafted into the Thai military and forced

1:41.7

to go fight in a war against the neighboring country of Burma.

1:45.1

And for Mok, getting drafted had really come at like the absolute worst possible time.

1:50.9

Because at the time, his wife, May Knock, had been just a couple of months pregnant with their first child.

1:57.5

And so he had had to just, you know, basically leave her behind to give birth on her own, which was obviously really difficult for her and for him.

2:04.6

Like he wanted to be there for her and he couldn't.

And also this is 1850s in rural Thailand.
