Today we're going to talk about a movie that's barely a romance.

And yet, it's on lists of rom-coms because of things we've discussed before.

Movies geared toward women always have to have a romantic component and therefore be dubbed

as romantic films. James Bond movies also always have a romantic or sexual subplot, and yet we

let them be action films. I don't make the rules, guys. So even though it is slightly off topic, we'd be remiss if we made

hot and bothered without contending with a movie this successful. It had a $40,000 wig in it.

It made us all think differently about the color blue.

It made us all hear the vitriol in the simple phrase, that's all.

And that is, of course, the devil wears Prada.

2008 was, as we've been discussing, an amazing year for women's films.

But you don't get 2008 without the Devil Wears Prada in 2006.

It had a scant $40 million budget and yet made $326 million.

It was based on previously successful IP.

It borrowed a cinematographer, costume designer, and director from the Sex and the City franchise.

It had the same writer as 27 dresses.

2008 was the year that studios decided that women go to the movies, but that was based in large

part on the success of Devil Wears Prada in 2006.

The movie is about Andy, played by Anne Hathaway, recently having moved to New York City with her boyfriend

Nate. Andy is trying to get a job writing at a magazine and gets an interview at Runway,

a knockoff of Vogue. The job is not to write, but to be the assistant to the apparently famous

Miranda Priestley, based on Anna Wintour.
