The original screenplay for the Devil's Foot is a beautiful and largely faithful adaptation of the Doyle story. Its origins, however, were somewhat unconventional, as executive

producer Michael Cox explained in his book. In the spring of 1987, a young writer sent

June Wyndham Davies an unsolicited dramatization of one of the home stories. This was a rare

event. Original plays used to arrive out of the blue quite frequently. They are the new writer's calling card,

but the process of commissioning an adaptation is quite different. The producer chooses a story,

selects a writer, and the two of them meet to discuss the shape of the script. A contract is agreed

upon, dates are set, and then, and only then, does the writer put pen to paper.

But with the devil's foot, Gary Hopkins broke the mold. He did the work first, sent it in,

and it was so good that we decided to buy it.
