Welcome to the Dept podcast. My name is Freddie Maggard. I'm joined by Nick Rouse and Louisville.

It's with heavy hearts that we do this podcast today. After we learned of the passing of Coach

John Slarman, such an incredibly inspirational man. I've known John for many years and right now,

Leanne is family or in our prayers and we ask that you pray for them or send them positive vibes

or thoughts or however you do it because heaven earned an angel today in John Slarman and

his legacy at the University of Kentucky, especially the football program, the university period,

the state of Kentucky. We'll go down in history as someone that has showed all of us how to live

a life, even in the most difficult times. John taught me several things by watching him go

through what he did. I've had a tough year and at times I've wanted to feel sorry for myself,

but I can't look at it and I think about what John was going through on a daily basis.

It's tough. It's going to be a tough couple of days. It's going to be a tough year.

So in that football complex, it was if you've even in pregame or in the catwalk or during the games

or during practice, during films, you see how his players, his offensive lineman looked at him.

It was much more than a player coach relationship. He was a second father to most of the offensive

lineman and they loved their coach, John Slarman. They cared for him deeply. He taught them football,

but he taught them how to be a man, taught them how to live. His football specifically,

he was the man that built the personality of Kentucky football. He built that big blue wall from

the beginning. He was on the original staff and been through all the way and he built that

toughness. His offensive line took on the personality of their coach, of being tough, of being

hardworking, of being dedicated, of living life the way it should be lived and his legacy will go on

forever. I'm going to miss John. We are looking for positives from this and see the legacy with

his players. But you know, the last game that he coached was a win at Tennessee. Man, what are
