The old-fashioned park is lined with classical statues, trees and fountains,

and provides views of the Royal Palace and Palais de la Nation, also known as the Belgian Federal Parliament.

These gardens are so unusual, I'm paying.

Taking pride of place at the front is an imposing statue of King Albert I,

who reigned in Belgium from 1909 to 1934 when his country was occupied by German soldiers during World War I,

before overseeing Belgium's post-war recovery.
