Ronald Edmund Thompson was born on February 21st, 1925 in the suburb of Carlton in Melbourne,

In November of 1936, the theft of a neighbor's watch landed Ronald and his family on the radar of the state welfare authorities.

And as a result, Ronald was sent to a school for orphaned, wayward, and neglected boys in Sunbury, while his three sisters were made wards of the state a year later, when they were officially declared neglected.
