Today, as part of a week of programs to mark 75 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe,

we're taking you back to April 30th, 1945 when the German Nazi leader

Adolf Hitler killed himself in a bunker in Berlin as the Soviet army closed in on the German

capital.

That news came on the 1st of May 1945. German radio said Adolf Hitler had died fighting to the last breath against Bolsheism and for Germany.. In fact he'd killed himself in the bunker

beneath his government headquarters where he and members of his inner circle had

taken refuge as Russian troops advanced on Berlin.

The last 10 days were actually a nightmare.

We were sitting in the bunker and the Russians came closer and nearer and we heard the firing and the gunfire and the bombs.

Hitler's personal secretary, Chaudel Junger, was with him in the bunker, one of the few to witness those final days.
