Summary

In this edition Yonit and Jonathan consider the 'deal of the century', in the light of the negotiations underway between former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the legal authorities in Israel for him to avoid a trial in exchange for lesser charges and being excluded from public office. They ask what it could mean for him, his party and the politics as a whole in israel.  And in the week following the hostage crisis at a synagogue in Texas, Yonit and Jonathan assess the impact of yet another attack on a Jewish institution in the US. They speak to a leading Los Angeles Rabbi, Sharon Brous, about the implications of rising anti-Semitism  for American Jews and the sense of vulnerabilty despite the community's apparent success.  And finally for chutzpah and mensch, we get a fallen star of Hollywood and a super-Rabbi. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hi, Jonathan.

0:22.8

Hello, Yonit.

0:23.8

How are you doing this week?

0:25.5

I'm okay.

0:26.1

You know, last week when we discussed the book, Jews don't count with David Bedele

0:31.7

and that whole blind spot many people have and that they don't see Jews as a minority

0:35.8

and definitely not as a persecuted minority. So maybe it's naive of me to think that those people received a rather

0:43.1

rude awakening with the hostage situation in Collieville, Texas on Saturday. We talk a lot,

0:50.3

you and me about the rift between diaspora and Israel. I do have to tell you that when

0:54.3

this, the news was trickling in and we realized what was happening, and this was Saturday, 10.30

0:59.2

p.m. in Israel, all three networks broke their original programming and went to the live

1:05.4

reporting from a special bulletin and a live reporting from Coleyville, Texas.

1:11.2

That's interesting and important, actually, the idea that there is peoplehood in a situation

1:16.4

like that. There is a connection. It was certainly the case that Jews around the world were doing

1:21.9

the same, I think, and thinking of, you know, if they had been in synagogue that day or even if they hadn't,

1:29.7

thinking of their own rituals, this has been a big sort of introduction again. I say introduction,

1:36.0

it's happened so many times, but yet again, Jews were explaining either to friends or to people

1:40.4

on social media that this is what it's like. You are checking the doors and the exits and security as you go in.

1:47.7

It was one of those real jolts to the system.
