You probably entered the deep web every day without even realizing it.

For decades, the terms deep and dark have been used interchangeably and incorrectly, so much so that Wired

magazine mentions it in its style guide to ensure writers use the correct terms when reporting

on hidden service news. What are hidden services? Unlike human-friendly domains such as

triplew.amazon.com, a hidden service is comprised of 16 characters, followed by the dot

onion domain. This domain will be undetectable by standard search engines, but can be found by anyone with Tor software

or other tools installed on their computer. In the most basic sense, the deep web contains

content that will not be revealed by a search engine. Just as you can't share a post on Facebook with the world if it's edited to be

viewed by friends only, or a random person cannot access your online bank account, or at least

not without a specific skill set, or the public can't view a corporation's private data, the information on the deep web

not only consists of the majority of the internet, but it is also invisible to most internet

surfers. Even the average online shopping experiences delve into the deep web once you begin a detailed search

for say a particular sweater or a pair of shoes. Court records, academic papers, library,

and government databases all exist below the surface in the deep web. The iceberg analogy when discussing the

regions of the internet is popular and for good reason. The surface web is that chunk of the

internet visible to the public, or in the case of our iceberg, above water. Like our iceberg, the surface web is smaller than what awaits us below.
