So today we have an episode that's a little bit different.

It's two parts and today and tomorrow we're telling the story of this thing that happened

in Afghanistan.

It is a war story but it's also about the way that we tell war stories,

how we tell them in court and to the public and how that story can change and the consequences.

The account that you're going to hear is from interviews with people who were at

the heart of this story, along with trial records and court transcripts.

I don't want to say too much before we get into it, but I do want to mention that this is an

episode that talks about suicide, so you should probably be aware of that.

The place where this all starts is this big announcement that happened at the end of last year.

And when I first heard the news, frankly, I didn't pay that much attention to it.

I just kind of saw the headlines and moved on.
