Summary

What gives the cross its redemptive value is not the amount of suffering or bloodshed, but the amount of love that was put into Christ’s sacrifice. The cross is less about taking on punishment and more about the total gift of love Jesus offered to the Father on our behalf.

As the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross this week, Dr. Sri takes us into the heart of the cross—which is ultimately the heart of God and his passionate love for his people.

0:19.6	This week the Catholic Church celebrates the great feast of the exultation of the cross.
0:24.2	The Church invites us this week to really ponder this central mystery of our faith that Jesus
0:30.1	died for our sins, but do you understand the cross? Do you understand what it's really all
0:35.2	about? Could you explain it to someone else? I think many times Catholics could be a little
0:39.7	fuzzy when it comes to the cross. They often have some misconceptions about the cross in part because many
0:46.1	times we might take in some popular notions of the cross, especially that are found from our
0:51.7	non-Catholic brothers and sisters out there.
0:53.6	You may hear preachers say things like this.
0:55.8	Jesus died for our sins and he took on the wrath of the father.
0:59.5	The innocent son took on the punishment that we deserve for us.
1:03.8	And the story goes something like this, you know, that God,
1:06.4	the Creator created us and we rebelled against Him.
1:09.4	We rebelled against His law.
1:10.9	We disobeyed Him and we deserve to be punished. God is a God of justice and
1:16.8	so we've been separated from him all these years but he's also a God of mercy and so in his
1:22.1	mercy he lovingly sent his son the eternal son to enter
1:26.6	time and space and he took on human flesh in Jesus Christ and Jesus the loving
1:31.8	son loves us so much that he took on our punishment for us.
1:37.0	On Good Friday, he went to Calvary, he carried that cross, he was nailed to that cross cross so that he could die instead of us.
1:46.0	He took on the punishment of the father.
1:48.6	He took on the full brunt of the father's wrath, the wrath that we deserved was inflicted upon Jesus.
