Usually we're history told by the people who were there, but this week we've been taking an

animal's eye view of the past. Today I'm taking you back to the 1950s to the story of a remarkable

horse in a race where the honor of two great nations was at stake along the border between the United States and Mexico.

I could just feel the excitement right now just sitting here I could just feel the

excitement of all the people just anxious standing up you know from where they were

sitting trying to look above everybody else's head to see one of those horses would align.

This is Ralph Romero. His father was the owner of a horse called Relampago, Lightning.

He was a very beautiful horse. He was a chestnut-colored horse. His coat just

used to shine. You could see the muscles throughout his body. He was a good riding horse when he had a riding saddle on and then when you put a race saddle on I mean a horse knew what that meant and he loved to run.

When Ralph was a child, Relampago was what that meant and he loved to run.
