Summary

Is there a crisis facing young men in America? Richard Reeves, the president of the American Institute for Boys and Men and non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, joins Ravi to explain why boys are falling behind in school, struggling with their mental health, and feeling more isolated than ever—and what we can do about it. Ravi and Richard explore the reasons both major political parties have largely failed to address this crisis, how their neglect has created space for figures like Andrew Tate and Jordan Peterson to rise, and the cultural battlegrounds shaping young men’s perspectives today. Welcome to The Lost Debate, a show for political eclectics. I'm Robbie Gupta. And if you were to ask me in like my top three list of people to have on this podcast that I've been meaning to talk to for a long time, Richard Reeves would definitely be one of those three. He has somebody who I have long wanted to ask a lot of questions, and we finally got him.

0:21.6

He is a senior fellow in government studies and president of the American Institute for Boys and Men.

0:28.3

He is at the Brookings Institution as well.

0:31.1

He's written a bunch of books, including books about the plight of young men and boys.

0:35.9

And he has been somebody who has been sounding

0:38.5

alarm for a long time about certain trends among young men, young boys that he has argued the

0:44.9

left and the center have ignored. And so we talk all about those trends, all about, you know,

0:50.4

everything from K-12 to higher education, to workforce development. We then get into politics.

0:56.3

We talk about Andrew Tate, Jordan Peterson, Josh Hawley, the difference between the different

1:01.9

thinkers and strands of thinking within the right. What are valid arguments? What are some

1:06.8

critiques of the way people on the right and the left talk about these issues.

1:11.3

And then we come out with some solutions.

1:13.1

And so I think you're going to love this episode.

1:15.0

Definitely one of my favorite ones in a long time.

1:17.6

Let's jump it.

1:21.8

Richard, welcome to the podcast.

1:23.6

Thank you for having me on.

1:25.6

Well, Richard, I used to be a school principal in North Nashville,

1:28.1

which is a neighborhood with the largest incarceration rate of black males in the country. And

1:32.6

the project that you have been at the forefront of, which is examining the crisis of young men

1:39.1

is something that's near and dear to my heart. So first, I just want to say, thank you for all the

1:42.0

work that you've been doing and all the commentary that you've had an analysis over the past few years. So it's a privilege to talk to you. Thank you for saying that. Thank you for your work. You were at the sharp end of it. It's easy to write books and think tank papers. It's much harder to do what you were doing. Well, I think the obvious question to start with is like, I think some people need
