Summary

On a storm-lit night in Minnesota, two high school friends parked by a quiet reservoir to watch lightning split the sky. What started as harmless awe turned into something neither of them could explain. From somewhere beyond the water came the sound of crying. At first, it was faint. Distant. Easy to dismiss. But there was no one else there. As the thunder rolled, the sobbing grew louder… closer… like someone wandering blindly through the dark, searching. And whatever it was, it was moving toward them... This happened when I was still in secondary school.

A friend of mine, Rachel, and I, drove out to a public reservoir outside of Minnesota.

There had been thunderstorms rolling through the region all evening, and we were parked near a designated recreational area, watching lightning hit across the water.

We weren't doing anything unusual, just sort of sitting in the car, talking, windows down, you know. But around 10pm,

1:02.7

a county ranger came through and told us that the area was being closed off. We left without argument,

1:08.7

obviously. Neither of us felt like going straight home, though, so I drove us to another pull-off and I'd been there before with some friends. It wasn't marked as a park, just a gravel area near a bluff overlooking the same body of water. No lighting, no facilities. I'd never had any issue there. As soon as I shut off the engine, Rachel received a call

from her boyfriend. He was agitated and said that he had a strong sense that something was wrong

She ended the call quickly.

We got out of the car and walked about ten metres toward the edge of the overlook, sitting on the flat rock.

The storm was still pretty distant.

There wasn't much wind.
