Travel east of New York City's five boroughs and you'll end up at the beach, Gilgo Beach, Oak Beach, and Jones Beach, situated on the barrier islands

off the southern coast of Long Island.

These beaches are connected by Ocean Parkway, a sprawling highway.

But in 2010, the highway linked more than just the beaches.

It became a dumping ground for a mysterious killer.

Police looking into the disappearance of a New Jersey prostitute on Long Island a year and a half ago

say they found her purse with photo ID inside and her jeans. They haven't found Shannon Gilbert.

The current theory is that she drowned while

running away from something, but in the year they've been looking for her, they

have found the remains of 10 people dumped in the brambles off a beach road some

50 miles east of New York City. Suffolk County Police Chief Richard Dormer

says investigators think all of the killings dating back as far as 1996 are tied to

The Long Island Gilgo Killer is suspected to have murdered between 10 and 16 people, possibly as far back as 1982.

The identity of the killer is still unknown. He's free to walk the beaches of Ocean Parkway,
